Characters with disabilities in anime

 I’m an Anime Otaku with severe disabilities, but I want more people with disabilities to appear in anime for no reason. Therefore, in this article, we consider how to handle characters with disabilities in anime.

 First of all, most of the handicapped people in Japanese anime are acquired. There are overwhelmingly many patterns of being disabled by being injured in an accident or in an incident or battle (such as Code Geass’s Nunnally). With this pattern, you can easily explain the reason why you have a disability, and it is easy to make a story in the form of confrontation with past trauma and related causes. In other words, it is disability as a dark past to be confronted.

 In rare cases, persons with congenital disabilities may appear. However, in such cases, they usually have superhuman abilities in exchange for disability (eg blind, but a swordsman who can detect all signs of the enemy). This is the so-called strong character position. In this case, the disability is used as an excuse for the strength of the character or as a reason for making the character’s ability peaky.

 Of course, I’m not saying these are bad. I also love the stylistic beauty of anime. However, we, persons with congenital disabilities, do not become disability because of our past to be confronted, nor do they have the ability to cheat in exchange for disability. I wonder if such ordinary people with disabilities can appear in the anime for no reason.

 In that sense, Mimori Togo, in “Yuna Yuki is a hero,” seemed ground breaking. I was paying close attention to her before the broadcast. She was sitting in a wheelchair without any explanation, and was naturally accepted and assisted by other characters. When I saw this, I remember being excited, “Is it finally the era when people with congenital disabilities become commonplace in everyday anime!” (The following spoilers) However, as the story progresses, it turns out that her legs do not move at all in the cost of the past battle, and in the final story the curse is released and she can start walking. I was very disappointed with this. (End of spoilers)

 A very suggestive point in considering the treatment of persons with disabilities in animation is the movie “A Silent Voice”. The inner surface of the deaf heroine Nishimiya Shouko is very difficult to understand. The more I think about it, the more I don’t know what she is thinking of. However, the characters of normal people around me read the easy-to-understand message from her and bully, get angry, cry, sympathize, and like it. It is a frequent occurrence in reality that a person with a disability herself says nothing , makes a fuss about herself by reading her own intentions. In fact, over the movie, the debate over whether or not it was emotional pornography and whether or not discrimination by persons with disabilities was overheated without the deaf person being a party to this issue. “A Silent Voice” can be said to be an excellent meta-critical comedy movie that directly caricatures such reality.

 By the way, I think that the reason why people with disabilities do not appear in the animation is hidden in “A Silent Voice” and the discussion surrounding it. In other words, when a person with a disability is made to appear, the context is arbitrarily added to the person regardless of whether they want it or not. The surrounding characters and viewers are swayed by it, and they get excited in places that have nothing to do with the story. They can’t stay as “one of the characters” and scratches the whole piece. For works that have no special theme of disability, it can only be a negative factor. Therefore, it is not possible to make a person with a disability appear for no reason, and at the time of appearance, it is necessary to attach some sort of Excuse and contain the influence of the character in it.

 I have a dream. The first is to set a frame for people with disabilities in the characters of Kirara anime. The ratio of persons with disabilities to Japanese people is about 7.4% * 1 . In order to reflect this reality in anime, if the average number of characters per Kirara anime work is set to about 7, one out of two works should have a disabled character. Naturally, because there is a reasonable consideration obligation for characters with disabilities, for example, if there is a character in a wheelchair, Kirara Jump should be banned. Some may feel that it is too strict, but considering the great social influence that Houbunsha has, it is appropriate to assume this level of moral responsibility. In order to realize a symbiotic society, I would like to request that diversity be incorporated into Kirara anime.

 The second is that one day, there will be a Kirara-style club activity animation in which the characters are all disabled. People with physical disabilities, visually impaired people, hearing impaired people, mentally handicapped people, mentally handicapped people, etc. are different in what they can and cannot do. Since they spend time in one club room, they inevitably help each other. A close relationship occurs. There is a possibility of lily(Yuri). For example, pushing a wheelchair, speaking in sign language, writing a finger on the palm, these are fine lilies (making relationships). The Yuri frontier is here.
